Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 vs Galaxy Watch 8: What’s New

Samsung Galaxy Watch9 watch 9 hero

If you own a Galaxy Watch 8, keep it. The Galaxy Watch 9 looks the same, has the same screen, sensors, GPS, and storage, and Samsung claims the same battery life of up to 30 hours. Everything new in the software is coming to your watch as a free update. It is never worth replacing a twelve-month-old watch with its successor, and nothing here changes that.

If you are buying new, you have a real choice between a discounted Watch 8 and the Watch 9, and it comes down mostly to which size you wear. The small Watch 9 has a noticeably bigger battery than the small Watch 8. The large one does not.

I have tested neither watch. Everything below comes from Samsung’s own figures and announcements, not from my testing. The full numbers are on the Galaxy Watch 9 specifications page, and last year’s watch is covered in Galaxy Watch 8: everything you need to know.

What is new, and what is not

Everything else is the same: the case sizes, the screens and their brightness, the sapphire glass, the aluminium body, the memory and storage, the health sensor, the GPS, the charging, payments, Wi-Fi and the water and toughness ratings.

Battery life: a bigger battery, the same claim

This is the change people ask about, and the honest answer is that Samsung has not claimed a longer runtime. It says up to 30 hours for both watches, in both sizes. The small Watch 9 has about a fifth more battery to draw on, and Qualcomm says its chip is more efficient.

Which size you wear decides how much this matters. The small Watch 8 had the smallest battery of any current Galaxy Watch, and people with smaller wrists had no other option. The small Watch 9 closes most of that gap, for an extra gram and a half. The large Watch 9 gains about 2 per cent, which nobody will notice.

Samsung does not say how many hours of GPS either watch records, so I cannot tell you from its figures whether a small Watch 9 will get you through a long ride with more to spare than a small Watch 8. What I can say is that a watch claimed at 30 hours gets charged every day, whichever generation you own.

Neither watch fast charges. Samsung’s support page says so for the Watch 9: about 80 minutes for the small watch and about 90 for the large. Samsung doesn’t list a charging time for the Watch 8. I cover the whole subject in Galaxy Watch vs Apple Watch charging speed.

A new chip, which you will not notice

The Watch 9 and the Ultra 2 are the first Galaxy Watches to use a Qualcomm chip instead of Samsung’s own. The two chips are built the same way, and the memory and storage have not changed. The only thing that would matter to a runner is whether the new chip uses less power during a GPS workout, and Samsung has not said.

Bluetooth goes up a version. Samsung has not tied any feature to it.

The new training features are software, and the Watch 8 is getting them

The Watch 9 launched with Daily Cardio Load, Vitals, Fitness Index, Heart Health Score, a warning when noise around you is loud enough to damage your hearing, and a better sleep apnoea check. Of these, Daily Cardio Load is the one a runner following a plan will use most: it tells you how hard your recent training has been and how much rest it needs.

None of this needs the new watch. The health sensor is the same in both generations, and the features belong to the software. Samsung started testing that software on the Watch 8 in late August 2026, beginning in South Korea, and has not given a date for the finished version. Running Coach, Energy Score, bedtime guidance and the antioxidant reading were already on the Watch 8 when it launched. My earlier pieces on Wear OS 7 and sport and Samsung’s Vitals alert explain what the software adds.

Looks, sizes and the missing Classic

Both watches come in the same two sizes with the same aluminium case. Samsung says the Watch 9 is slimmer and that its strap has air pockets for comfort, but the published case measurements match the Watch 8 to the tenth of a millimetre. Cream replaces Silver on the small watch.

There isn’t a Watch 9 Classic yet. The Watch 8 Classic was larger, with a rotating bezel, a bigger battery, and twice the storage; it sold from $499 or £449, and Samsung has not replaced it. I discussed what that means when the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 designs leaked. If you want the rotating bezel, last year’s model is the only way to get it.

Should you upgrade?

Not from a Watch 8. The screen, sensors, GPS, storage, and claimed battery life are the same, and the software comes via updates.

The Galaxy Watch 8 still makes sense  if

  • You are buying the large size, where the battery is the same size for all practical purposes, and the Watch 8 is well below the Watch 9 price.
  • You are happy to wait a few months for the new health features to arrive via an update.
  • You want the rotating bezel, which only the Watch 8 Classic has.

The Galaxy Watch 9 makes more sense if

  • You are buying the small size, where the battery is a fifth bigger for an extra gram and a half.
  • You want the new software and health features on day one.
  • The Watch 8 discount where you shop is small. At launch, the two were only $30 or £30 apart.
  • You want the Cream finish.

If your watch is older than a Watch 8, the Galaxy Watch upgrade guide goes through each generation in turn. That is where an upgrade can make sense.

Also considering the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2?

If battery life is why you are looking at a new Galaxy Watch, the Watch 9 does not change Samsung’s claim, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is the one to look at. It lasts twice as long between charges, charges faster, has a titanium case, works as a dive watch and connects to a cycling power meter, for roughly twice the price. See Galaxy Watch 9 vs Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 for this year’s two watches side by side, Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 vs Galaxy Watch Ultra for what changed at the top of the range, and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 vs Apple Watch Ultra 4 for Samsung against Apple. Samsung’s figures come from its announcements for the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Watch 8.

Quick answers

Does Galaxy Watch 9 have better battery life than Galaxy Watch 8?
Not on Samsung’s figures. It claims up to 30 hours for both watches. The Galaxy Watch 9 has a bigger battery: about a fifth larger in the small size and almost the same in the large size.

What is the battery capacity of Galaxy Watch 9?
390mAh in the 40mm watch and 445mAh in the 44mm. That’s about 20 per cent and 2 per cent bigger than the same sizes of the Galaxy Watch 8.

Is it worth upgrading from Galaxy Watch 8 to Galaxy Watch 9?
No. The screen, sensors, GPS, storage and claimed battery life are the same, and Samsung is bringing the new software to the Galaxy Watch 8. Replacing a twelve-month-old watch with its successor is not worth the money.

How much does Galaxy Watch 9 weigh?
31.5g in the 40mm size and 34g in the 44mm, without the strap. The small one is a gram and a half heavier than the small Galaxy Watch 8, and the large one weighs the same.

Is there a Galaxy Watch 9 Classic?
No. The Galaxy Watch 9 comes in 40mm and 44mm only. The Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, a 46mm watch with a rotating bezel, is the most recent.

Will Galaxy Watch 8 get One UI 9 Watch?
Yes. Samsung began testing it on the Galaxy Watch 8 in late August 2026, starting in South Korea, and has not given a release date.

What chip does Galaxy Watch 9 use?
The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite. The Galaxy Watch 8 uses Samsung’s own Exynos W1000. Both are built the same way, and Samsung has not said the new one lasts longer.
