Richmond Marathon: September 18th, 2016 (info)
New to the Richmond Running Festival this year is the inaugural MARATHON. Apparently there are only 1,500 places (no I’m not doing the race). But I do know the area reasonably well.
This must surely be the prettiest Marathon route in the UK. Forget sightseeing in SW London…just do the marathon??
The picture-postcards of the route, below, from the organiser are great. But I’ve run in that area and there are MANY MORE great views. for example I understand that the route goes down the Thames towpath near Eel Pie Island in Twickenham (Rolling Stones, 1960s etc etc)…err , that’s super nice.
I’ve never run through Kew Gardens but that would be great as well.
So where’s the catch? Well there’s a large and pretty hill in Richmond (called Richmond Hill, funnily enough) this has the only protected view in the UK AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO RUN up it. The whole course to me looks as flat as you can get. Part of the course is the Kingston Parkrun. That can get very muddy in winter but should be fine in summer.
IMO I suspect that this will turn into one of London’s iconic race over the next few years. I might even do it next year.
