Garmin CIRQA: Full Battery Info – Saver Mode Bricks It

Garmin claims up to 10 days for the CIRQA. The owner’s manual then lists three separate things that reduce it but fails to quantify any of them. One of those is Battery Saver, which just about turns everything off, making the device nearly useless! Not great!

Battery Saver disables the sensors

Garmin’s owner’s manual describes Battery Saver as reducing LED brightness and disabling heart rate, start activity, auto activity detection and pulse oximeter. What remains working is the accelerometer, so the band still counts steps and logs movement overnight, but that’s it.

Everything the Gen 4.1 sensor exists to measure stops.

Garmin also states that disabling the heart rate monitor removes the follow-on data for VO2max, sleep tracking, intensity minutes, all-day stress and Pulse Ox. As the Battery Saver disables heart rate, the same consequences follow.

A mode that extends battery life by turning off the reason you bought the device is a legitimate design choice for a flight or a weekend without a charger. It is definitely not a setting to leave on!

CIRQA’s three documented battery drains

Garmin flags but fails to quantify each of these in the manual.

  1. Heart rate broadcasting. Broadcasting to a paired Edge, a watch, gym equipment, or a third-party app decreases battery life.
  2. All-day Pulse Ox. The pulse oximeter has three modes: All Day, During Sleep and Off. Garmin notes that All Day decreases battery life.
  3. Pulse Ox during sleep. The overnight mode, required for Breathing Variations, which flags possible sleep apnea and breathing disturbance.

The last one is important. Overnight SpO2 as part of more accurate sleep tracking is a notable part of why someone buys CIRQA rather than a cheaper band, and I would consider turning it on to be the normal use case. Garmin hasn’t published a figure for battery life with SpO2 enabled.

Why 10 days is achievable at all

CIRQA’s hardware spec has no GNSS, no display and no Wi-Fi. Those are the three largest continuous power draws on a conventional watch.

The Gen 4 optical array also appears to run on a lower-power processor than the Gen 5 used in the Index Sleep Monitor (sans ECG). That partly explains the choice of Gen 4 over Gen 5, cost being the other obvious reason.

The CIRQA pod is also larger than its rivals, which was likely a design choice to accommodate a bigger physical battery.

Checking the battery without a screen

The band has no display, so battery state reaches you three ways.

  1. A double tap on CIRQA’s pod reports the charge state by the colour of the LED. Solid green for about two seconds means full. Flashing green means charging, and the flash period lengthens as the charge rises. Solid orange means low. Solid red means critically low. (Battery Status must be enabled in Garmin Connect).
  2. The battery remaining percentage appears next to the device name in Garmin Connect. A notification also arrives on the paired phone when the band needs charging.
  3. A Low Battery Alert vibrates the band and flashes the LED red, and a Battery Fully Charged Alert vibrates and flashes green. Both are configured in Garmin Connect. The full set of states is in the button and LED guide.

Charging

A full charge takes up to 90 minutes using Garmin’s proprietary cable into the four-pin contacts on the back of the module. The other end goes into a standard USB port.

Charging only works between 0C and 45C. The device operates from -20C to 60C, so there is a band of cold weather in which the CIRQA will run but will not accept a charge.

What to expect in practice

With Pulse Ox off and no broadcasting, 10 days is a decent figure to work from. With overnight Pulse Ox enabled, expect meaningfully less. Garmin has not said how much, but by looking at performance on other Garmin devices, the loss could be meaningful, i.e. several days.

Anyone using the band as a heart rate source for training will get an even shorter life, because broadcasting carries a further cost.
