Best smart trainer 2026: types, Zwift compatibility, and platform lock-in explained
Smart trainers have become cheap enough that a competent direct-drive unit now costs less than a mid-range GPS watch. The basic requirement — controlled resistance, ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth FTMS connectivity, Zwift compatibility — is met by devices from £300 upwards. At that price point the question is not whether a trainer works with Zwift, but which additional features matter to you and whether the hardware you are considering will tie you to a single platform.
Types of smart trainer
Wheel-on trainers clamp the rear wheel of your bike. They are the cheapest entry point to smart training and compatible with almost any bike. The resistance unit contacts the tyre directly, which produces tyre wear, some noise, and lower power accuracy than a direct-drive unit. For occasional indoor training or a first smart trainer, a wheel-on unit is adequate.
Direct-drive trainers remove the rear wheel entirely and bolt the drivetrain directly to the unit. They are quieter, more accurate for power measurement, and produce a more stable platform. They require a cassette that fits your groupset. Most serious indoor cyclists use direct-drive. The price premium over wheel-on is around £200-400 and is worth paying for anyone who trains regularly indoors.
Smart bikes are complete indoor bikes that replace your road bike rather than mounting it. They eliminate the cassette, tyre wear, and bike-fitting friction of a trainer, and typically deliver the most accurate power measurement in the category. The Wahoo KICKR BIKE and KICKR BIKE PRO are the best-known examples. Price runs to £2,500-4,000 and above. The right choice for athletes who train indoors four or more times a week and want to protect their road bike from trainer wear.
Rollers require the rider to balance the bike freely. Smart rollers, including the Wahoo KICKR Rollr, add resistance control and Zwift compatibility to the roller format. They suit athletes who want the handling challenge of rollers without losing the training software integration of a smart trainer.
Zwift compatibility and platform lock-in
Every serious smart trainer from Wahoo, Tacx, Elite, Saris, and JetBlack uses open ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth FTMS protocols, which means any of them work with Zwift, MyWhoosh, TrainerRoad, Rouvy, SYSTM, and every other major indoor training platform.
The exception is the Zwift ecosystem of hardware. The Zwift Hub and Zwift Hub One are direct-drive trainers sold at aggressive prices with the expectation that the buyer will subscribe to Zwift. The Zwift Cog and Click accessories replace the cassette and shift levers with Zwift-specific hardware that is functionally optimised for Zwift but practically awkward to move to another platform. Buyers who want to use MyWhoosh, TrainerRoad, or SYSTM alongside or instead of Zwift should avoid the Zwift-specific hardware and choose an open-protocol trainer instead.
Wahoo KICKR: the benchmark for comfort and realism
The KICKR V6 is the direct-drive flagship and the standard against which other trainers are measured for accuracy, noise, and ERG mode stability. For most serious indoor cyclists it is the correct choice at around £900-1,000.
The KICKR MOVE adds fore-and-aft rocker motion to the direct-drive platform. The bike rocks slightly forward and backward in response to power output and out-of-the-saddle efforts, replicating the natural movement of a bike on the road. On longer indoor sessions this matters more than almost any other feature: a stationary platform concentrates saddle pressure in the same points for hours at a time, which causes discomfort that rocker motion substantially reduces. If you ride indoors for more than 90 minutes regularly, the KICKR MOVE is difficult to argue against.
Other comfort and realism features worth knowing:
- KICKR CLIMB: a front-wheel riser that tilts the bike nose-up on virtual climbs and nose-down on descents, matching the gradient shown in Zwift or Rouvy. Adds postural variety that reduces back and neck fatigue on long sessions.
- KICKR AXIS feet: add lateral motion to the rear axle of any compatible KICKR trainer, giving a side-to-side sway that approximates the bike’s natural lean.
- KICKR HEADWIND: a smart fan that increases output in response to speed, trainer power, or heart rate, providing airflow proportional to effort rather than a fixed cooling blast.
The Tacx NEO family generates road surface simulation through the motor, producing a distinctive vibration on cobblestones and gravel in supported apps. Some riders find this immersive; others find it irritating. It is worth experiencing before committing to a NEO if this feature is relevant to your decision.
Competent budget trainers
Direct-drive trainers from Elite, JetBlack, and budget Wahoo tiers deliver adequate power accuracy and full Zwift compatibility at prices from £300-500. The Elite Justo, Elite Suito, and JetBlack Volt are among the most tested budget options. The compromises at this price point are typically heavier flywheels with less road feel, slightly lower power accuracy, and less refined ERG mode stability. For athletes who train indoors once or twice a week and want Zwift compatibility without a significant outlay, a budget direct-drive trainer is entirely adequate.
Tacx NEO 3M: Garmin’s smart trainer range
The Tacx NEO 3M is Garmin’s current direct-drive flagship. It is known for extremely quiet operation, built-in power measurement without a calibration requirement, and road surface simulation via the motor. The NEO does not require a power calibration spin-down; the motor measures power directly rather than estimating from speed and resistance. Garmin ecosystem integration — connecting trainer data to a Garmin head unit or watch — is tighter on the NEO than on any non-Garmin trainer.
