Garmin Tactix 8 Opinion : Comparison to Fenix 8, Tactix 7

Garmin Tactix 8 Series: for the mission – not the adventure

More: Eight Sleep Pod 4 Review

Garmin’s latest series of tactical watches, Tactix 8, are designed for military personnel whose missions require advanced dive, ballistic, aviation and marine features. If they want to complete an Ironman triathlon, a round of golf, or track steps and sleep, Tactix 8 is perfect for them, too.

Tactix 8 – Where it fits in the Garmin Range

Tactix 8 is Garmin’s top watch, based on the same technologies as the more popular Fenix 8, with additional features to justify the $300 price bump. The second tier alternative would be Garmin’s Instinct 3 TACTICAL, which has been leaked but not yet released. Nevertheless, Tactix 8 will be at least twice the price of Instinct 3 TACTICAL. I’ll cover the differences in a minute.

Tactix 8 replaces the older Tactix 7 AMOLED (September 2023)

Garmin Tactix 8 – Model Options

Previous Tactix 7 editions were released over an extended period as Garmin adopted AMOLED. That confusion has been cleared up with Tactix 8, where all models are available to order in Feb 2025 – AMOLED (AB), Solar (AB), and Solar+Applied Balistix ELITE Solver.

Garmin Tactix 8 – Key Tactical Features

The key tactical features are Stealth Mode, Night Vision Mode, Dual Grid Coordinates, Kill Switch, Rucking Mode, and one of two Ballistics solvers. XERO locations appear missing (Garmin typo?).

Here are all the relevant tactical feature details:

  • RUGGED – Titanium bezel, sapphire lens, and an enhanced graphical interface. It is tested to U.S. military thermal, shock, and water resistance standards.
  • MISSION-READY – Key features include a jumpmaster activity, waypoint projection, dual-position GPS format, stealth mode, kill switch, compatibility with night vision goggles, and rucking activity.
  • NAVIGATE – Provides superior positioning accuracy with Dual-Frequency GNSS/GPS/SatIQ. Built-in sensors include a 3-axis compass, gyroscope, and barometric altimeter.
  • APPLIED BALLISTICS – The preloaded Applied Ballistics Elite or Ultralight solvers provide aiming solutions for long-range shooting in the field.
  • RECREATIONAL DIVING – Features a 40-meter dive rating, supporting scuba and apnea dive activities at typical depths.
  • BUILT-IN FLASHLIGHT – A built-in multicolour LED flashlight (torch) provides quick access to a bright, steady beam in green or white light. In Night Vision Goggle (NVG) mode, white is disabled, and the green flashlight becomes dimmable.
  • NIGHT VISION – NVG mode allows stealthy operation with controls to further dim brightness and black out the display to reduce detectability.
  • STEALTH MODE – While keeping the watch operational, stealth mode stops storing and sharing GPS position and disables wireless connectivity and communication.
  • PROJECTED WAYPOINTS – Allows users to set and save remote geo positions for later navigation.
  • RUCKING ACTIVITY – A dedicated rucking activity profile enables users to input pack weight.
  • DIRECT-TO NAVIGATION – Direct navigation to a location or waypoint in the worldwide aeronautical database. The Nearest function activates a path to the closest airport.
  • WEATHER REPORTS – Grants access to aviation weather, including NEXRAD radar, METARs, and TAFs, displaying winds, visibility, barometric pressure, and more.
  • AB QUANTUM APP – A smartphone app that allows users to manage profiles and targets or use their smartphone as an additional display.

Garmin Tactix 8 – A vast array of other non-tactical features

Key non-tactical features include an excellent AMOLED display, detailed sleep-tracking abilities, tap-and-go payments with Garmin PAY, extensive mapping capabilities, advanced training features, and more. Here are the key ones to watch for, and after this section, I’ll go on to the comparisons.

Garmin Tactix 8 Comparisons

The older Tactix 7 has the same listed price, so there is no reason to buy the older one unless you find one heavily discounted on sale.

With Tactix 8, you’re getting some extra smart features, slightly improved technical innards and an entirely new set of dive features. If you’re into diving, it’s a no-brainer to go for Tactix.

Garmin Tactix 8 AMOLED va Tactix 7 AMOLED

You get the latest leakproof inductive buttons and a new built-in speaker/microphone.

Those hardware features bring better software features such as dive functionality, voice control (poorly implemented), taking connected phone calls or playing audio rather than the old ‘beeper’.

Battery life is slightly better on Tactix 8 AMOLED, but if you go for the solar version, the performance of the new solar tech will be notably improved.

There are other minor differences.

Garmin Tactix 8 vs Fenix 8

Both have great dive features, but Tactix adds a complete set of aviation and tactical features that Fenix does not have.

Garmin Tactix 8 vs Instinct 3 Tactical

Instinct 3 Tactical is not yet released (imminent)

Buy Garmin Tactix 8 – Price and Availability

The Garmin Tactix 8 is available in one Black colour, with prices starting at $1,299.99. Shippinbeginsts toward the end of Feb 2025. Initially available from garmin.com, appearing later on Amazon (affiliated links below)

Take Out

It’s Garmin’s best watch. If you can afford it, there are a few reasons to buy one of the other Fenix variants. It only comes in one colour, but even that’s a sensible one.

      1. Strange that my comment show up here because it was meant for the Descent 2, which doesn’t have the flashlight for unknown reasons (unless someone wanted to safe money??). Anyway, be aware that you don’t get the nylon band with the 47mm AMOLED version…but I guess the 1400€ price tag doesn’t justify a second band. You need to buy the 1500€ AMOLED or Solar 51mm version or the 1700€ Solar Elite to get one. The term cheapskates comes to mind!!

  1. Other than the fact that some form of Applied Ballistics now comes standard (as opposed to being a $300 optional upgrade), I don’t really see much interesting with this watch. It has all the usual Garmin “tactical” upgrades, not really any new ones as far as I can tell, and offers no new hardware features at all. And why is Garmin still refusing to put more than 32GB of storage in even their most expensive watches?
