
Garmin Forerunner 70 review: parkrun recommended, beginners too
The Garmin Forerunner 70 sits at the bottom of the company’s running range but more than holds its own against competitors at the same price. Realistically every entry level running watch in 2026 now has too many features for first-time watch buyers wanting the simplicity of a sports-only device to use a few times a week. Garmin definitely gives you that and you get free access to most of its Connect ecosystem – the most capable on the market today. The trade off is complexity and ease of use where Garmin has always needed to improve. Is it overkill? A: Probably. But you have the reassurance that you might grow into its capabilities that extend far beyond running.
This model uses tech from three or four years ago which will bother some of you. I’ve tested it extensively (results below) and even though it is older tech Garmin has had plenty of time to tweak it to perform really well. It’s more than accurate enough for most purposes.
Heads Up: I have no links to Garmin whatsoever and bought this with my own money. I’ve got no problems recommending you to buy a competing Polar, Suunto, Coros, Apple or Amazfit watch if you want something a little easier to use.
Garmin Forerunner 70
Garmin Forerunner 70: enough watch for most runners, at $249.99/£219.99
The Forerunner 70 is the cheapest watch Garmin makes and, for most runners, the last one they need. Garmin has cut hardware specs and been generous with the software, so the training and recovery guidance is the same as more expensive watches, and what you lose only matters if you swim open water, ride with power, or care about elevation.
Accuracy is the reason to buy it. The battery claim is the reason to check your expectations.

- Someone who wants to wear a sports watch only for sports 2-5 hours a week

- Someone who prefers simplicity and ease of use
- Someone who wants to run to music or to wear the watch outside of sports as a smart watch – there are no NFC payments.
The Forerunner 70 is a beginner’s watch but its features and possibilities will cover all the aspects of running you will need plus those you might grow into in years to come.
What the Forerunner 70 changes over the Forerunner 55
The Forerunner 70 replaces the Forerunner 55, Garmin’s best-selling Forerunner. The entry price moves up to £219.99 / $249.99, and Garmin’s sub-£200 running watch is gone.
Hardware changes over the 55 are significant:
- A 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen at 390 x 390, replacing the MIP display, bright and easy to read.
- The Elevate Gen 4 optical heart rate sensor.
- A 43mm fibre-reinforced polymer case at 40g.
- Five physical buttons, retained alongside the touchscreen.
The Forerunner 70 also gains Evening Report, Health Status and Lifestyle Logging, and it runs the 2025 Garmin interface shared with the Forerunner 570, 970 and Fenix 8. The Forerunner 70 logs and labels all common gym activities, from Yoga and HIIT to Padel and Pickleball. Running power is an advanced running metric that hasn’t appeared at this price before. Training Status shows your progress over recent days and weeks, and Training Readiness tells you whether you are fit to train hard today. Swimming is pool-only, and the bike side supports speed and cadence sensors and Varia radar but cannot use a power meter.
Forerunner 70 – A Perfect Compromise: Forerunner ranges past and present
The Forerunner 935 (on the left, below) launched almost 10 years ago and looks superficially similar to today’s models. In reality, everything has improved. Displays are now excellent, bright colour AMOLED touchscreens. GPS is mostly accurate, albeit from a prior-generation sensor, as it also is with the optical heart rate sensor – still good though. Battery life has improved dramatically across all of Garmin’s latest Forerunner models. Interfaces are easier to use, training plans and suggestions are included, physiology metrics are added to assess many aspects of recovery and performance.
Yet the top-of-the-range Forerunner 970 (I have one) probably won’t have that many more running features you’d ever use, but you will pay twice the price for what is admittedly a watch made of superior materials. Forerunner 70 has a great combination of ecosystem features and price. Of course, Garmin’s prices are a bit higher than competing brands, as you’re paying for the name and the complete package with the Connect app.
Setting up the Forerunner 70
I’ve set up lots of watches, and Garmin is one of those I dread. The Forerunner 70 is no exception. There are too many small hoops to jump through, and when things go wrong you’ll inevitably have to Google for help. Apple just doesn’t have these issues…ever.
Similarly, your first week with the watch and the app might be OK, depending on what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to record a run and see how you performed, you’ll be fine. If you want to customise the screens, you will wear your fingers out and might give in. Then I even get confused about where certain settings or options live, both on the watch and in the app. The current interface on the Forerunner 70 is the latest 2025 version and an improvement over the predecessor. However, it could still be improved, but you will eventually get used to it. The smartphone app is all-encompassing but can be hard to use.
Heads Up: If it’s your first time with a Garmin, you will almost inevitably need to search for help on how to use it.
Case, screen and how it wears
Spec facts: 43mm fibre-reinforced polymer case, 40g, chemically strengthened glass lens, 5 ATM (50m) water rating, five physical buttons alongside the touchscreen. Colours: Citron, Soft Pink, Tidal Blue, Cool Lavender, Black and Whitestone. In simple terms, the screen can scratch easily, and it feels like it’s made of plastic.
The design is that of a solid sport watch. The colours and poor out-of-the-box watchfaces will mean you’ll never wear it at work or in the evenings.
I’ve got a smallish wrist, and this looks and feels fine for me but smaller than I prefer. If you have small wrists, this will likely be OK, but it’s certainly not super-small. It’s a proper running watch, so it’s very light, and the display is perfectly readable with beautiful, vibrant colours.

How I tested the Forerunner 70
I kept my testing focused on running, covering intervals, a 5K UK parkrun, and my 10-mile standard GPS test, plus other tests in built-up areas and at varying intensities. Here is my testing methodology.
Forerunner 70 GPS accuracy, tested
Test A – Bushy Park parkrun
I ran with my dog on a lead from the back of the Bushy Park parkrun course, a measured 5000m course with generally excellent GPS reception. However, I deviated from the shortest route on many occasions to get around people, and I would have expected my actual distance to be recorded as 5020-5030m.
Forerunner 70 and 970 both recorded 5010m, whereas the Forerunner 170 and Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 both recorded 5.00km.
Each device recorded a visually excellent track as shown below.
Test B – Kingston urban canyon, 50m underpass, close to tall buildings
FR70 and FR170 both performed variably against the supposed reference devices, the FR970 and Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 (on the latest v6 firmware). I say ‘supposed’ reference devices as the Huawei is significantly worse here than at launch. All devices struggle in these difficult reception conditions, where the signal is lost for 50 metres, and there are numerous times when they have to deal with reflected (multipath) signals when running very close to buildings. Results are somewhat of a lottery and are generally unreliable in these conditions, with many times when the recorded track is over 5m from the actual route. That said, FR170 and FR70 did perform well next to some of the buildings, but probably more by luck than anything else. The bottom line is that if you plan to run or race by pace in built-up areas, you must use a footpod like Stryd.
This particular segment of the run recorded distances of Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 (2.97km), FR70 2.94km, FR170 2.98km, and FR970 2.94km (actual Stryd footpod distance). You can’t read anything into the closeness of the other devices to Stryd, as there were periods of over- and under-recording that just so happened to approximate the correct distance in this instance.
From a zoomed-out level, you might be happy with the tracks you recorded for your logs; however, zooming in on any section shows numerous clear deviations between the devices, with the FR970’s GPS track being the most accurate on the day.
Test C – suburban grid
On this particular segment, the three watches recorded almost identical distances. The FR170 and FR70 both showed 3.73km, matching the Stryd footpod exactly, and the FR970 showed 3.75km.
The tracks were mostly excellent, with FR70 deviating slightly from the path but always staying parallel, suggesting a possible timing error in one or more satellites.
Test D – 10-mile test run
The FR170 did not record or did not sync, so there is no comparison figure for it on this run.
The Forerunner 70 had the best performance on my 10-mile test that day compared to any other single-frequency watch I have tested. Performance certainly isn’t perfect, but it is one of the very few single-frequency watches where I would say it’s good enough for my own use. Well done, Garmin. This is a hard test.
Aggregate scores over easy, medium, and hard sections were 85%, 88%, and 94%, respectively, so it scored better on the harder sections! This implies an element of luck on the day for whatever reason. Perhaps the only cause for concern was on a multi-kilometre stretch in very open conditions towards the end of the run where the FR70, at times, was on the pavement on the wrong side of the road, which is an error of over 5m on an easy section.
Test E – ride to Windsor
FR70 and FR170 sat nicely in the middle of the distance ranges for this ride, coming in at 62.99 and 62.97km, respectively. Roam 3 was 62.83km, and Apple Watch Ultra 3 was 62.92km. That’s just over 150m spread across all four devices, so they all appear to perform well even without knowing the true distance.
A visual inspection of each GPS trace shows no cause for concern for any device, as expected in most open-road cycling scenarios.

Across four tests, the Forerunner 70 performed very well overall. It matched the Stryd reference exactly on the suburban grid. On the urban canyon segment it also landed on Stryd’s figure, though periods of over- and under-recording cancelled out along the way, so that one proves little. At parkrun it recorded 5010m where I had expected 5020 to 5030m, and on the Windsor ride it came within 83m of the average of the other three devices.
Forerunner 70 heart rate accuracy, tested
The Forerunner 70 uses the Elevate Gen 4.0 optical HR sensor. Top-end Garmin watches, such as the FR970 below, use the 5.0 version, and there is also an improved 4.1 version used on Garmin CIRQA. The Gen 4 sensor has some known quirks that sometimes show up when performing intervals or riding. Here are my test results to show you if I experienced them again this time around. The test results cover a range of HR intensities while running, plus tests in the gym doing weights and yoga, and finally a long, bumpy bike ride.
Test F – parkrun steady, easy zone 1 to 2
The Forerunner 70’s optical heart rate accuracy was excellent overall, though with wider limits of agreement than newer models. Against the Forerunner 970 (paired with HRM 600 chest-strap reference), it showed bias of −0.9 bpm and 95% limits of agreement of −12.8 to +11.0 bpm (n = 1,737); against the Polar Sense reference, the bias was −0.5 bpm with limits of agreement −10.5 to +9.5 bpm (n = 1,737). Note that the FR70 took a few tens of seconds at the start of the run to catch up to the correct heart-rate level.
Test G – easy rising effort from zone 1 to zone 2
Accuracy was again excellent, with somewhat wider limits of agreement. Against the Forerunner 970 (HRM 600 reference), it recorded a bias of −0.4 bpm and 95% limits of agreement of −7.6 to +6.8 bpm (n = 976); against the Polar Sense reference, the bias was +0.2 bpm with limits of agreement of −4.9 to +5.3 bpm (n = 980). Visually, the FR70 again took a few tens of seconds at the start to rise to the correct heart-rate level.
Test H – short intervals
This time, I ran three short 1 to 2 minute intervals: the first followed by a walk, the second from a standing start, and the third with an immediate stop, to test how the devices respond to rapidly changing effort.
The Forerunner 70 coped well with the rapidly changing effort. Against the Forerunner 970 (HRM 600 reference), it recorded a bias of +0.5 bpm and 95% limits of agreement of −8.6 to +9.7 bpm (n = 1,298); against the Polar Sense reference, the bias was +0.3 bpm with limits of agreement −5.9 to +6.5 bpm (n = 1,298). Like the FR170, it showed a minor false-peak blip and was slightly slow to respond on the third interval, yet the overall visual result was good.
Test J – long steady tempo run
This test was a relatively constant-tempo effort for well over an hour, and it is hard to repeat. The FR170 was not started, so the Forerunner 70 runs alone here. The result was surprisingly near-perfect.

Accuracy was excellent on this evening run. Against the Polar Sense reference, it showed essentially zero bias (−0.0 bpm) and extremely tight 95% limits of agreement of −1.4 to +1.3 bpm (n = 4,836); against the Forerunner 970 paired with HRM 600 chest-strap reference, the bias was −0.1 bpm with limits of agreement −2.3 to +2.2 bpm (n = 4,836).
Test K – upper body strength workout
Working mostly on gym stations for upper body, I found the results good against a reference chest strap, reference biceps band and against Whoop MG. The Forerunner 70 was the weakest of the four here.

Results were good here, but more variable than on any of the runs. Against the Polar Strength reference, it showed a bias of −1.0 bpm and 95% limits of agreement of −10.8 to +8.9 bpm (n = 2,660); against the HRM 600 chest-strap reference, the bias was −1.1 bpm with limits of agreement −12.3 to +10.1 bpm (n = 2,652). Visual inspection revealed several short but notable incorrect spikes, likely caused by significant arm and wrist movement affecting the wrist-based optical sensor.
Test L – yoga
In a strength-focused yoga session holding extreme positions for some time, the results were good against a reference chest strap, reference biceps band and against Whoop MG. The Forerunner 70 was again the weakest of the four.

The Forerunner 70 held up well through the roughly 70-minute session. Against the Polar reference, it showed a bias of +0.8 bpm and 95% limits of agreement of −5.3 to +6.9 bpm (n = 4,345); against the HRM 600 chest-strap reference, the bias was +0.8 bpm with limits of agreement −7.7 to +9.2 bpm (n = 4,340). Visual inspection revealed four notable troughs and one spike over the course of the session.
Test M – road cycling, zone 2 to 3, sometimes bumpy surfaces
These were surprisingly good results from the FR70 and FR170 when road cycling to Windsor. Roads were bumpy in many places, and at times I was riding in a fairly aggressive position with wrist flexion, even with the devices touching the bars.
Accuracy on the bike was excellent under the same conditions. Against the Polar Sense reference, it recorded zero bias (−0.0 bpm) and 95% limits of agreement of −2.8 to +2.8 bpm (n = 7,338); against the FR970/TymeWear Vital Pro reference, the bias was +0.4 bpm with limits of agreement −3.3 to +4.1 bpm (n = 7,338). Visually, it showed only a few very minor deviations from the reference lines.
Elevation without a barometer
The FR170 has a barometric altimeter, whereas the FR70 does not. Both derive elevation from GPS, but the barometric altimeter, which only the FR170 has, allows for more granular, accurate readings. You can see that clearly on this trace from a ride to Windsor, where the only device lacking the barometer is the FR70, which gives a more jagged elevation profile. Either way, it still needs a calibrated or manual fix to start correctly, and both watches get that right here, unlike the Apple Watch, which starts around 10m too high and never corrects.
The FR170 looks good based on this one test, and the FR70 is good enough. If you’re doing long hikes or ultra runs, don’t rely on the FR70 for precise elevation; that’s where the FR170’s barometric altimeter earns its keep.
Battery life against the 23-hour claim
I used the DCRainmaker Analyzer to track battery charge states through each recorded workout. Results for GPS recording mode varied widely, from around 12 hours to 25 hours, likely skewed by some unusually short test workouts.
The Forerunner 70 recorded continuously in all four tests and averaged 18.6 hours against Garmin’s 23-hour GPS-only claim. Results generally fell short, though one test projected 25 hours, above the claim. The worst single result, 12.5 hours, is barely half the GPS-only claim.
Garmin publishes two GPS figures for this watch: 23 hours in GPS-only mode and 16 hours in All-Systems GNSS mode. The 18.6-hour average sits between them, comfortably above the All-Systems claim and short of the GPS-only one. I did not record which satellite mode was active during testing.

Garmin’s claims for the Forerunner 70: up to 13 days in smartwatch mode, falling to 5 days with the always-on display enabled, up to 28 days in battery saver mode, up to 23 hours in GPS-only mode and up to 16 hours in All-Systems GNSS mode.

Training Readiness, Training Status and Body Battery on an entry watch
- Training Readiness. A useful score to indicate when you can next train hard, combining sleep score, HRV status, remaining recovery time, acute training load, sleep history, and stress history into a single morning figure. You’ll need to wear the watch as you sleep for a couple of weeks to establish a baseline, and then you’ll start to get easy-to-interpret feedback: 95–100 Prime, 75–94 High, 50–74 Moderate, 25–49 Low, 1–24 Poor.
- Training Status. Another useful one-word verdict summarising the impact of your recent training over the last seven days against the three-to-four-week VO2 max trend (Productive, Maintaining, Peaking, Recovery, Unproductive, Overreaching, or Detraining). Needs at least seven days of recorded activity to produce a stable reading. This is not intended for the occasional or beginner runner, but if you are keen and start to run too much, this metric will warn you.
- Body Battery. A 5–100 energy-reserve score; it recovers mainly through sleep and drains through exercise, stress, and illness. Current zones: 76–100 high reserve/ready for intense training, 51–75 medium/moderate activity, 26–50 low/consider lighter activity, 5–25 very low/prioritise rest. Takes one to two weeks to calibrate; scores of 50–70 are normal and not a fault during that window. This metric shows how your body’s energy supposedly recovers during the day, and it’s a metric that looks great and is loved by many; unfortunately, its scientific basis is a little shaky. A good bit of fun, though.
Smart features, and what is missing
The Forerunner 70 covers Smart Notifications, on-wrist texting on Android or through Garmin Messenger, LiveTrack, incident detection with live location, the Connect IQ store, Google Maps turn-by-turn on Android and Garmin Share. There is no Garmin Pay, no music storage and no Wi-Fi.
Bottom line: Smart features are basic and limited. You can change the watchface to a good one, and there are a huge number of apps on the Connect IQ app store, many of them free.
When to get the Forerunner 170 instead
Is the FR70 really the right Garmin for you?
For £40 more, the Forerunner 170 adds a barometric altimeter, and on this evidence that is the one difference worth paying for. It brings real-time elevation, vertical speed, total ascent and descent, and floors climbed, none of which the Forerunner 70 derives reliably from GPS alone. Garmin Pay, open water swimming, power meter support, the Cycling Coach, a compass and a thermometer each matter to someone, but only the altimeter changes how the watch performs at what it is for.
Pay a bit more again, and the 170 Music adds streaming music support.

Price, colours and what’s in the box
The Forerunner 70 costs £219.99 / $249.99 and went on sale on 15 May 2026, announced three days earlier. It comes in six colours: Citron, Soft Pink, Tidal Blue, Cool Lavender, Black and Whitestone. There is no Music variant and no second case size.
It launched alongside the Forerunner 170 at £259.99 / $299.99 and the Forerunner 170 Music at £299.99 / $349.99. The Forerunner 70 is the cheapest watch in the Forerunner line, and at £219.99, Garmin no longer sells a running watch below £200.
Out of the box, you get the watch, a charging cable and lots of paper you’ll never read.
At the launch price, the Forerunner 70 is decent value and recommended.
Verdict
Garmin is probably the safe bet a friend recommended to you or the only sports watch brand you’d heard of.
The Forerunner 70 is the running watch to buy if you also want coaching and recovery metrics, and are not interested in advanced features in other sports or advanced smart features like NFC payments. It does the sports piece accurately – it produced the best 10-mile GPS result of any single-frequency watch I have tested, matched a Stryd footpod exactly on the suburban grid test, and kept heart rate within tight limits across seven sessions covering different sports, intensities, and conditions.
There’s always a but. And here it is.
Garmin claims 23 hours in GPS-only mode and 16 hours in All-Systems GNSS. I averaged 18.6 hours across four continuously recorded tests, with one (short) session at 12.5 hours and another at 25 hours. That sits between the two claims and easily covers most beginner needs between charges, though it falls short of the headline figure on the box.
Runners who need accurate elevation, contactless payment or a power meter should spend the extra on the Forerunner 170. Everyone else is finished at £219.99.
