The problem is software update longevity. Garmin typically delivers major feature additions for approximately two years post-launch, after which a device receives only bug fixes and safety corrections. The FR965 is in the same position. Is the Vivoactive 6 worth choosing over the Forerunner 70?
The Vivoactive 6 lists at $299 and regularly discounts to $249 — the same price as the FR70. The Vivoactive 6 carries the same adaptive coaching stack as the FR70, an AMOLED display, music support, and Garmin Pay. Its 42mm case is slightly more lifestyle-oriented in design than the FR70’s sporting aesthetic.
The FR70 beats it on two points: the FR70 carries running dynamics metrics that the Vivoactive 6 lacks, and it has a more sport-focused case. For a gym athlete or casual runner who will not pair a Stryd or chest strap, the Vivoactive 6 at $249 is the right choice. For a runner who wants the full Garmin running stack, the FR70 is better.
The Vivoactive 6 also carries the same software longevity caveat as the prior-gen Forerunners: it launched in late 2025 and is already into its second year. The FR70 and FR170 launched in mid-2026 and have the longest remaining update window of any current affordable Garmin.

What about the Vivomove and Lily?
