Best Garmin Forerunner 2026: which model is actually worth the extra money?
The honest answer to which Garmin Forerunner to buy is almost always the Forerunner 570. The software platform is identical across the entire current lineup. Every model runs the same adaptive coaching, the same training readiness, the same race predictor, the same HRV Status and Body Battery. The FR970 does not coach you better than the FR70. What it does is house that software in better hardware.
The case for spending more on a Forerunner is a case about build quality, sensor specification, and a small number of hardware capabilities genuinely absent on cheaper models. The feature gap between the FR70 and the FR970 is smaller than Garmin’s marketing suggests.
The current Forerunner lineup
Garmin currently makes four active Forerunner models. From bottom to top:
- Forerunner 70 ($249): Elevate Gen 4 sensor, 43mm, MIP display, 13 days battery, 13 hours GPS. No power meter support, no Garmin Pay, no open-water swim, no altimeter.
- Forerunner 170 ($299): Elevate Gen 4 sensor, 43mm, MIP display, 15 days battery, 17 hours GPS. Adds altimeter, Garmin Pay, open-water swim over the FR70.
- Forerunner 570 ($549): Elevate Gen 5 sensor, 42mm or 47mm AMOLED, 11 days battery, 18 hours GPS. Adds power meter support, dual-frequency GPS, music, speaker and mic, NFC payments, skin temperature over the FR170.
- Forerunner 970 ($599): Elevate Gen 5 sensor, 47mm AMOLED, titanium bezel, sapphire crystal lens, 15 days battery, 26 hours GPS. Adds topographic maps, voice control, and deeper physiological analysis over the FR570.

The sensor question
The FR70 and FR170 carry the Elevate Gen 4 sensor. The FR570 and FR970 carry the newer Elevate Gen 5, which adds ECG capability and skin temperature sensing. On the FR570, ECG is present in hardware but disabled in firmware. For runners who want the most current sensor hardware, the FR570 is the entry point. For runners who do not use ECG or skin temperature, the Gen 4 in the FR70 and FR170 is adequate for all training purposes.
For the best possible heart rate accuracy regardless of Forerunner model, a chest strap removes optical sensor error entirely. The Garmin HRM-Pro pairs with any current Forerunner and adds running dynamics on top.
Case quality and durability
The FR970 carries a titanium bezel and sapphire crystal lens as standard, the same lens material as the Fenix 8 at the equivalent tier. At 56g and 12.9mm thick, it is lighter and slimmer than any comparable Fenix 8 configuration.
The FR570 uses a polymer bezel with chemically strengthened glass rather than sapphire. Over two years of daily use that lens difference is visible. The FR70 and FR170 also use polymer cases with chemically strengthened glass.
Maps: the one feature gap that matters
The FR970 has full topographic maps with turn-by-turn navigation. The FR570, FR170, and FR70 support breadcrumb navigation from a loaded GPX course but carry no underlying map context. For road runners this distinction rarely matters. For trail runners who want to navigate unfamiliar terrain without a phone, the FR970’s maps are the single most legitimate reason to pay the premium.
If maps matter and you also want more battery or a larger case, the Garmin Fenix 8 is worth considering. The trade-off is weight: the Fenix 8 47mm AMOLED runs to 73g versus 56g for the FR970. Battery life
The FR970 reaches 26 hours in GPS mode versus 18 hours for the FR570. For most road runners and marathon athletes this gap rarely matters. For ultramarathon runners or athletes who do very long training days, the additional eight hours is meaningful. Beyond that, the Enduro 3 is the correct answer rather than any Forerunner.
The case for the FR70 and FR170
Both models carry the full Garmin adaptive coaching stack: daily suggested workouts, training readiness, HRV Status, Body Battery, race predictor, and structured workout execution. A runner preparing for their first marathon on a FR70 has access to the same coaching intelligence as one using a FR970. The FR70 at $249 is the most complete entry point to Garmin’s training ecosystem the brand has built.
The FR170 adds the altimeter, Garmin Pay, and open-water swimming for $299. For runners who want these specific additions without the FR570’s price, the FR170 is the right answer.
