Suunto Race 3S, Race 2 or Run 2 – which one to buy

This article helps you choose between models within the Suunto range. You’ve already decided to switch to Suunto or perhaps are upgrading from an older Peak series watch.

Suunto now sells three AMOLED sports watches with offline maps between £265 and £435. Race 3S and Race 2 carry the full Suunto feature set, and Run 2 leaves out Climb Guidance, SuuntoPlus sport apps and workouts from outside providers. Race 2 has the biggest screen and the longest battery, and Run 2 is the cheapest and has the best tested accuracy so far.

The Race Series is pitched as a more capable one than the Run series.

All three run the same Suunto software, and the differences come from features Suunto leaves off Run 2 and from hardware. Hardware figures are on the Race 3S, Race 2 and Run 2 specification pages, and the Race 3S launch report has price and availability.

What Run 2 leaves out

Run 2 has the same maps, screen brightness, and dual-band GPS as the dearer watches. Suunto holds back four things.

  • Climb Guidance: Run 2 shows the map and the route but gives no climb-by-climb breakdown.
  • SuuntoPlus sport apps: Run 2 can’t access the SuuntoPlus store, so apps such as Varia radar and treadmill link are unavailable.
  • Structured workouts from outside providers: guides from TrainingPeaks and similar services do not load. Workouts built by hand do.
  • Sport modes: Run 2 has 35, against more than 100 on Race 3S.

A road runner following Suunto’s own plans loses little. A triathlete, a TrainingPeaks user or a trail runner who needs pacing on climbs needs one of the Race watches.

Navigation

Every watch here downloads free worldwide offline maps. Race 3S and Race 2 add Climb Guidance, and Race 2 gained 200-route storage, contour lines, map layers and tides in July’s update. Race 3S launches with contour lines and place names, and Suunto has announced Race Planner for it in a later update.

Race 2’s 1.5-inch screen shows noticeably more map than the 1.32-inch panels. Athletes who navigate unfamiliar mountain routes for hours will read it more easily.

Training and multisport

All three include training load, recovery, zones, ZoneSense with a chest strap, and Suunto’s training plans. Run 2 includes Marathon Time and Ghost Runner for road racing.

Race 2 has the most complete triathlon set, with automatic transitions, custom multisport profiles, heart rate broadcast to bike computers, and pool drill sets, as tested in Race 2 triathlon features. Race 3S runs the same platform with more than 100 sport modes.

Suunto AI Coach launches with Race 3S and includes three free months for its buyers. Suunto has not said which other watches it supports. The Suunto AI Coach explainer covers what is known.

Music and payments

Run 2 stores and plays offline music today. Race 3S gets offline music in a post-launch software update, and NFC is also due after launch. None of the three supports a streaming service.

What all three share as Suunto watches

The same company backs all three, so the ownership deal doesn’t separate them. Suunto offers a 2-year worldwide warranty, runs a battery replacement service, and charges nothing for the watch software, maps, or SuuntoPlus apps. It has no phone support, and live chat runs only on weekdays.

The difference is how long each watch stays current. Suunto’s July 2026 feature update went only to its newest models, so a watch’s release date is a fair guide to how long it will keep gaining features. Race 2 dates from August 2025, Run 2 from September 2026 and Race 3S from October 2026. The brand comparison sets Suunto against Garmin, COROS and the rest.

Battery

Race 2 records dual-band GPS for 55 hours, Race 3S for 45 and Run 2 for 24. A 24-hour limit covers marathons, most ultras up to 100 km, and any Ironman. Mountain 100-milers need one of the Race watches.

Race 3S gets within 10 hours of Race 2 in a watch 20g lighter, which is the new model’s main achievement.

Hardware in brief

Hardware Race 3S Race 2 Run 2
Display 1.32 in, 2,000 nits 1.5 in, 2,000 nits 1.32 in, 2,000 nits
Weight 56g 76g in steel About 50g
Lens Sapphire crystal Sapphire crystal Gorilla Glass
Bezel Titanium Steel or titanium Stainless steel
Storage 64GB 32GB 4GB or 64GB

Race 3S is the only one with sapphire and titanium as standard. Race 3S and Run 2 share a 46mm case and suit smaller wrists. The Race 3S strap fits 125 to 175mm, a tighter range than Run 2’s, so larger wrists should check the fit.

Accuracy

Run 2 is the most thoroughly tested watch of the three. It scored 90% on my standard 10-mile GPS accuracy test, and its heart rate stayed within 1bpm of reference sensors across eight sessions.

Race 2 scored 81% for GPS and showed a consistent heart rate bias during harder efforts. It uses an older Sony GNSS chipset.

Race 3S has new positioning hardware, and the satellite figures Suunto publishes for it match Run 2’s. Its heart rate module has the same six LEDs and four photodetectors as Race 2, now behind curved glass. Race 3S accuracy is pending testing.

Upgrading from an older Suunto

  • From Race S: Race 3S is the direct replacement, with 15 more hours of dual-band battery life, a far brighter screen, and new sensors. Race 3S vs Race S has the details.
  • From the original Race: Race 2 keeps the large format and adds speed and brightness. Race 3S suits owners who found Race too big.
  • From the original Run: Run 2 fixes the heart rate sensor and adds maps. Move to Race 3S only if you need the longer battery or Climb Guidance.
  • From 9 Peak Pro or 5 Peak: any of the three is a large step up in screen, speed and maps. Race 3S is closest in size and build quality.

The Suunto GPS watch guide covers the rest of the range, including Vertical 2. For rivals, see Race 3S vs Forerunner 570 and 970 and Race 3S vs COROS Apex 4.
