There are some meaningful but unexciting updates to Garmin’s major forerunner watches this quarter. Finally the backup and restore option is added which would have saved me several hours of faffing around over the last year or so had it existed on the FR965.

Readers of this site learnt in June that advanced swim features were to be boosted with the addition of ‘Send Off’ times and personalised rest periods. Some flavour of that is now added I believe.

I didn’t get any hints of the new updates to Race time Predictions. Hopefully, the updates will add some commonsense improvements that were previously lacking – such as predicting a slower race time than for a training run you just completed!

I need to look at the Garmin Run Coach feature some more. A one-line throwaway in a beta changelog could disguise a revamp of Garmin’s coaching ecosystem. It could be the properly adaptive coach for all distances that Garmin Coach (2018, 2019) never was. For example, it seems the new version dynamically assigns rest days and supports race distances up to a HM/marathon.

  • Added Device Settings Backup and Restore.
  • Improvements to support pool swim workouts with pace alerts and critical swim speed.
  • Improvements to the pool swim rest screen and alert tones.
  • Improvements to race time predictions based on fitness level and recent efforts.
  • Integrates the Garmin Run Coach feature into the Garmin Connect app.
  • Fixed lock screen vibration during sleep mode.
  • Fixed map data field text truncation.
  • Fixed edge case weather data display errors.
  • Fixed calendar display issues.
  • Fixed pool size selection in Garmin Connect real-time settings.
  • Fixed alert suppression during breathwork activity.
  • Fixed various language translation errors.
  • Fixed various bugs and UI improvements.

  1. I just discovered Garmin Share by accident today. It looks like Garmin Airdrop. When did that happen?

    1. Garmin share came to garmin watches after releasing garmin edge 1050. You can share your route to different watches, edges without need to connect to PC. I think, that first group of watches with garmin share, where fenix pro series end epix pro series, 2 or 3 weeks ago.

  2. “For example, it looks like the new version dynamically assigns rest days and supports race distances up to marathon.”

I didn’t find marathon running plan, only self-guided plan is available for 42k.

      1. Yes, I was referring to the website version of Garmin Connect.

I can only see Garmin Coach 5K, Garmin Coach 10K and Garmin Coach Half Marathon at the top of the page.

At the same time, I can see the self-managed marathon plans at the bottom of the page.

So my conclusion is that the adaptive Garmin Coach Marathon plan is still missing.
Or maybe you have it in your Garmin Connect?

  3. I am also interested to understand what this feature is: “Integrates the Garmin Run Coach feature into the Garmin Connect app.”

Garmin coach plans was already integrated I to Garmin Connect. It would be amazing if they mean the DSW feature which is based on events planned.

    1. Another site (Tech radar, IIIRC) said it was integrating the dynamic coaching with the static coach plans in the app. I installed the beta version of the update, and so far all I’ve noticed is they’ve taken away the pace range indicator and mile countdown and instead have a progress bar around the watch face.

However, my only coach workout since the install didn’t have a target pace. I have a tempo run scheduled today, so I’ll see if it’s any different then.

  4. 255/955 still getting updates even though they’re kinda hidden on Garmin’s storefront now. Nice.

Looks like minor improvements but Settings backup will be nice to have.

  5. I don’t know if this is an update to my 965 or it was to the Garmin Connect ecosystem, but…

I just had a new “Load Focus” category show up for me for the first time ever. I’m chronically either “High Aerobic lacking” OR “Anaerobic lacking” but today I got this one:

    “Low Aerobic Overage”

I do train generally with an 80/20 approach, and my Low Aerobic is always pegged to the absolute max, but I have never seen that particular category before, is it new?

  6. I’m new to sports watches and I have recently invested in FR965 and I truly love this thing BUT, it would seem that the coaching function is somewhat disconnected from my overall health/fitness data. The watch will tell me that there is significant recovery time needed but the Garmin Coach is pushing me to do a run. I feel quite torn between the two so I will generally run, only to be told by my FR965 that my fitness is decreasing due to over exercising. If this update (or future updates)puts some focus on having a training plan adapt to my health/fitness data, that, IMO, is not an unexciting feature. That’d be frigging sweet!

    1. It will think you are overtraining because theres no past history of activity. Keep doing the activities etc for a few weeks and it will build up a better picture of your health and fitness

  7. Garmin found the time to add yet more meaningless pages to the sunset widget.

Time they had better spend on bugfixing. Some bugs are over a year old (on my 965)
