Bloote: Find and follow personalised routes for every training session

The problem searching for new routes

When training for a race it can be difficult to find the right route when each session is different. For a shorter or tempo run you are probably interested in a simple route you can do quickly which is very close to your target distance, whereas for a longer run you may want a scenic route to follow.

To try and the find the right route you could try and draw something out using one of the many websites or apps out there. Once you have the route you then have to sync it up with your watch or roughly try and remember it. Bloote was built to fix this problem by building you a personalised route in under one minute which you can easily follow.

How it works

TLDR: Enter your location, target distance and then get up to 10 routes that you can follow with the GPX file or the in-built navigation.

Firstly, you enter your location, on the mobile app this will be picked up automatically, and then your target distance.

How it Works 1: A screenshot from bloote.co showing an example where the user has inputted their desired distance and location.

Next, you can personalise the route by choosing what is most important to you.

How it Works 2: A screenshot from bloote.co showing an example where the user has selected their preferences for the route.

Finally, you can then look through the routes that have been built. For each route you can see the distance as well as where and how long you may be delayed crossing busy roads.

How it Works 3: A screenshot from bloote.co showing an example where the user is viewing the first suggested route.

Once you have decided which route you want to do you can then take one of four actions:

  • Export the route to a GPX file
  • Follow the route with the in-built navigation (mobile app only)
  • Save the route for later
  • Share with a friend

Integrations

On both the web application and mobile application users can download the route as a GPX file so they can transfer it to their watch or a different navigation application.

Bloote can be integrated with other training applications whether it is via an API or customised URLs with the session information encoded in the link. So, the user then just enters their location to get a personalised route for each session.

Background

bloote.co was built by Nick Broom, a software engineer and runner who has found finding a good route to be a consistent pain when training for a race, especially whilst travelling.

Bloote is available for free to use at bloote.co.

FAQ

Can you edit routes?

The ability to edit routes is something I am working on now and will be released within the next week or two.

What is the difference between the mobile and web application?

Both versions contain the same features except for the navigation. So, if you want turn-by-turn instructions available whilst the phone screen is locked, or a better mobile experience then make sure to download the mobile application.

Does it cost anything?

Bloote is free for circular routes up to 21km. I am working on ensuring that it works reliably for longer routes, adding routes from A to B and looking at identifying good spots for intervals which will be part of a paid product in the future.

My favourite kit and nutrition

  • Maurten — the race nutrition trusted by elite athletes. Gels and drink mix engineered to be easy on the stomach.
  • Garmin 90-degree charging adapter — the small adapter that keeps your charging cable tidy at the stem. Essential for race day.
  • Garmin charging puck — the fastest and most reliable way to top up your Garmin before a session.
  • Ravemen FR300 — front light that mounts directly under your Garmin or Wahoo head unit. Keeps your bars clean and your beam pointed where it matters.
  • Garmin Varia RTL515 — radar rear light that alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind. Pairs with your Edge or Garmin watch.
  • Stryd — the footpod that brings running power to your Garmin. The single most useful running upgrade I have made.
  • Favero Assioma Pro RS2 — the power meter pedals most serious cyclists end up choosing. Accurate, easy to move between bikes.
