Edge 1050 Gets a New ‘button slider’ thingy

I had this information months ago but dismissed it, thinking that the “SLIDER” I had heard about was a software slider, i.e., some kind of on-screen scrollable bar.

However, a comment yesterday on this site from @Thomas said this: “The rounded shape of the display means that very likely there won’t be any space for buttons at the side of the unit…”. Look closely at the image above, and you will see what @Thomas means. The screen slightly wraps around the side of the unit, making the depth at the side shallow and leaving no room for traditional buttons.

I put two and two together and, for once, got four. It seems very likely that there will be at least one hardware slider. This could be a thin physical area that is either touch-sensitive or responds mechanically to pressure. Alternatively, the light-reflecting edges of the screen, as shown above, could themselves be an area of the screen that acts as a touchscreen slider.

Q: How might this work?

A: We shall see. It has a zooming effect on aspects of the screen but may also double as a way to progress from one screen to another. My favourite option would be for it to work like the zoom button on Wahoo ELEMNT bike computers which gives an in-ride ability to show more or fewer of the pre-determined metrics, if you zoom to show metrics the metrics enlarge to fill the space available. However the intel I received ages ago was only that it was used to navigate the menus.

  1. Interesting if there are no buttons. I would assume if this is the case then they would have had to make some really good advancements in screen use during wet conditions ..? Thoughts?

Side note – I keep seeing people comment on how ugly this is (same when the Karoo 3 leaks hit) but I have a feeling it may look way better in person than static images.

    1. i think it looks ugly but I also agree with you to an extent that I suspect it will look better in real life and, as said elsewhere, at least Garmin is innovating and trying something different.

  2. No push buttons that have seals to prevent water ingress???? Hope that come up with a definitive way to make a slider ingress proof for the most.

I do believe Garmin still can’t be beat as to the cycling computer world. Been using Garmin 20 years at least. Wanted to like the Karoo 3 but in the end the 1040 replacing my 1030 was hands down winner still.

      1. Why do you think all the other companies struggle with closing the gap to feature equality with garmin? After years of development it’s just a bit odd to me they are behind by a good amount.

      2. that’s a good question. obviosuly they want to. obviosuly it takes resources but…

garmin must have an order of magnitude number of developers greater than Coros but coros manages to get a decent number of tick-box features. but again, not the depth. so it must be the number of developers and infrastructure behind that. i think dcr MIGHT once have said garmin’s developemnt team was 100 people.
