new Features added for Edge 540, 840, 1040, 1050 – and a promise

Over the last year or so, many sports tech sites have realised that writing about new Garmin features gets a lot of clicks. That’s fine, people are interested in new, free stuff for their devices. However, the situation seems to have gotten a little out of hand with several new sites seemingly devoted to this area and some of the mainstream (ie, general tech) sites getting in on the act too. The specific thing that has gotten out of hand is the over-zealous publication and sensationalisation of trivial features and, mostly, bug fixes.

“Garmin Edge owners will be delighted with this new boost” – or similar titles have started to appear. Only for the reader to eventually find that it’s only a simple firmware fix being talked about.

I promise that I will only write about software that delivers new features, especially where multiple features or major features are added! Like today 🙂  The features covered here today are not that exciting, but there are a few, so it’s worth noting. Remember, you can get information on most firmware updates directly from gpsinformation.net, albeit sometimes a day late.

  1. Can you disable the Virtual Partner yet? I don’t know anyone who enjoys this feature, but I know of plenty who find it annoying. It seems to have been there since the Edge 200!

      1. It is not an answer, I am afraid. There are many Garmin devices that use VP arrow even if you dont add any VP datascreen and you dont specify any VP speed/pace.

I tend to think that VP is enabled automatically by a software bug or a design which could be changed not so easily.

I reported some examples that how much VP arrow is enforced: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-530/407360/why-is-vp-virtual-partner-reappearing-even-if-it-should-be-miles-ahead-or-behind-on-a-course

    1. so true. I often consider ditching Garmin just because of that second arrow on my map screens. So dumb it can’t be disabled and they seem tone deaf on it.

  2. I would love to have the Virtual Partner on my Edge 840 but it doesn’t have it, yet it’s on my 530.

Can someone please tell me how to install it. The reply above is for the Fenix 7 series.

      1. Thanks for the link.

According to Garmin, newer models such as the 840 do not have a dedicated VP Widget.
It can only be accessed during a saved course.

        Regards,
        Andrew.

  3. Is there a technical reason why Garmin won’t implement a simple but very useful feature: Auto Lap at Course Point? I’ve been asking Garmin for this for years but never any reply.

  4. Any word on an edge 850 release date? Is it still reasonable to assume it will happen in 2025?

  5. Can I navigate using a post code as all other devices in the universe can do

The Bell is handy but would be better if it can stay permanent in the data screen

  6. What I’d really like is the option to send a route say from Google Maps direct to the Garmin.
You’re out for a ride and decide you need a cafe stop.

I want to be able to do that and the first computer to be able to do that will get my cash.

Otherwise I’m staying with my old unit.

    1. Wahoo can send a POI and then you can navigate to the POI
years ago you could paste Google MAPS routes into the Karoo dashboard and sync to the HH device. (not sure it still does that)
