The honest answer to which Garmin is best for running is that almost any current Forerunner is good enough for almost any runner, up to and including marathon level. Every model in the current lineup — FR70, FR170, FR570, FR970 — delivers GPS tracking, adaptive coaching, training load, HRV Status, race predictor, and recovery guidance. A runner training three times a week and targeting a half marathon will not outgrow any of them.
The differences between models are real but narrower than the price gap suggests. They come down to case size and durability, a small number of hardware features that most runners never use, and battery life for athletes who genuinely need it. The software platform is identical across all four.
There is also a more important question that most Garmin-specific guides do not ask: do you actually need a Garmin at all?
Should you buy a Garmin or a smartwatch?
If you run three times a week and live inside your iPhone or Android ecosystem, a smartwatch that integrates deeply with your phone will give you more daily value than a dedicated running watch. If you want a Garmin: which Forerunner?
The starting point is the FR70 at $249. It runs the same adaptive coaching, the same training readiness, the same race predictor, and the same HRV Status as the FR970. For a runner who wants Garmin’s training platform and nothing else, it is the correct answer.
The case for spending more is a case about specific hardware features, not about coaching quality or training intelligence. The gaps between models are:
- FR70 vs FR170 ($50 more): the FR170 adds a barometric altimeter, Garmin Pay, and open-water swimming. Worth the extra for trail runners and triathletes. Not worth it for road-only runners.
- FR170 vs FR570 ($250 more): the FR570 adds an AMOLED display, dual-frequency GPS, music, a speaker and mic, NFC payments, and power meter support. Dual-frequency GPS is the only functionally significant running upgrade — it matters in city centre marathon routes and under heavy tree cover. Music and AMOLED are quality-of-life improvements.

Every current Forerunner lasts a marathon on a single charge with significant margin. Battery life only becomes a differentiating factor for ultramarathon distances requiring more than 13 hours of GPS, and for athletes who find weekly charging a genuine inconvenience. The FR70 and FR170 reach 13 hours GPS and 13-15 days smartwatch — most runners charge once every one to two weeks. The FR970 at 26 hours GPS and 15 days smartwatch extends that further. Beyond that, the Enduro 3 or Coros Pace Pro are more appropriate tools than any standard Forerunner.
Durability and case materials
The FR70, FR170, and FR570 all use polymer cases with chemically strengthened glass. The FR970 is the only Forerunner with a titanium bezel and sapphire crystal lens. Sapphire resists scratching in a way that chemically strengthened glass does not. For a runner who wears their watch all day every day, the FR970’s construction holds up noticeably better over two to three years. What about the Fenix 8 for running?
