Moto Watch 120 – Thoughts
More: Watch 120
Another week. Another smartwatch. What to make of the latest news from Motorola.
Moto’s Range & Some Tech Highlights
As of August 2024, Motorola’s watches include a band with a display, an Apple Watch-like rectangular watch and now a circular watch. the standout feature of Watch 120 is its AMOLED screen – the first on a Moto Watch.
Watch 120 is specifically designed to link its data to Google Fit (iPhone or Android) but runs proprietary Moto Watch OS software rather than Google’s Wear OS. Avoiding Wear OS will perhaps give it a half-decent battery life although Motorola is vague on this and so far only hints at 10 days life.
The Watch uses Assisted GPS (A-GPS). This means that it can only get positional information when your phone is nearby. This is not a sports watch but A-GPS will save tons of battery juice as your phone will take the hit instead.
Other than that the watch has a heart rate sensor that can also measure blood oxygen (#Shrug). When coupled with HRV measurements you get stress and sleep stage tracking.
On the smart side of things, it has a microphone and speaker and can make and take calls if your phone is nearby.
Take Out
The specs and capabilities are VERY pedestrian. There is nothing at all exciting to see here if you are a tech lover.
However, the starting price is $130/£130. That is competitive for an AMOLED smartwatch with a metal case, made by a respected brand. Probably fine for the occasional activity recording but wholly unsuitable for anyone with athletic intentions.

I don’t remember exactly, but I think around 2011, I had a Motorola Motoactiv. It outperformed all watches, including Garmin, until Google bought them out and shut down the program. Those who remember know what a brilliant project it was.
