Garmin Connect and Strava (RUNNA) – new link to Google Health Connect

At Google’s developer conference, Google I/O 2025, the company announced support for Garmin Connect and RUNNA (Strava-owned as of April 2025).

Types of Data Health Connect Can Sync

Health Connect sync supports synchronising both workout-like and wellness data. It can act as a staging post for sharing between apps rather than any given app having to organise synchronisation with partner apps.

Garmin and Strava (Runna) will have control over the direction of the sync (one-way or two-way) and which data they share with Google, but once Google has it, there is nothing to stop any other app from accessing that data. However, you do have control over every type of sync.

A new medical records synchronisation capability was also announced.

Fitness & Workout Data

  • Workout sessions (e.g., running, cycling, swimming)
  • Steps, distance, speed
  • Calories burned
  • Heart rate during exercise
  • VO₂ max, FTP, lactate threshold

Wellness & Daily Health Data

  • Sleep data (duration, stages)
  • Heart rate (resting, continuous)
  • Stress levels
  • Hydration tracking
  • Nutrition (e.g., calories, macros from food logs)
  • Menstrual cycle tracking
  • Body measurements (weight, BMI, etc.)
  • Vitals (blood pressure, blood glucose )

Medical Records API (New)

  • Allergies
  • Immunisations

Take Out

Don’t get excited about suddenly being able to put non-Garmin workout data into Garmin Connect automatically. That almost certainly won’t happen. Garmin will tightly control the direction and type of data transfer.

My favourite kit and nutrition

  • Injinji – Runners protect your toes. Avoid discomfort and minor injury. Run more. Run faster. I use them.
  • Garmin 90-degree charging adapter — The small adapter that keeps your charging cables tidy. Essential for race day. I use one.
  • Garmin charging puck — the fastest and most reliable way to top up your Garmin before a session. I use one.
  • Ravemen FR300 — Front light that mounts directly under your Garmin or Wahoo head unit. Keeps your bars clean and your beam pointed where it matters. I use one.
  • Body Glide – The blue anti-chafe stick that all swimmers and many runners use. I use it.
  • Maurten — The race nutrition trusted by elite athletes. Gels and drink mixes engineered to be easy on the stomach. I use them.
  • Garmin Varia RTL515 — A radar rear light that alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind. Pairs with your Edge or Garmin watch. I use this model.
  • Favero Assioma Pro RS2 — The power-meter pedals most serious cyclists choose. Accurate, easy to move between bikes. I use this model.
  • Garmin Forerunner 970 — A serious choice for a pro-grade triathlon watch. I use this.
  • Polar H10 — My daily driver for accurate, waking HRV readings.
  • Wahoo ELEMNT Roam 3 — The bike computer that has the feature Garmin lacks: usability. I use mine on most rides.

  1. Finally some good news from Garmin.

Syncing the data from my Withings scale to Garmin without having to rely on a paid 3rd party service would be awesome.

      1. didn’t fitnesssyncer do it as well? can’t rememebr…ages ago when i used to look at all that stuff. they were maximally linked to everything they could get into….for a fee

  2. a it missleading line “… share to Google…”

Health Connect retrieves and atores the data locally on your devixe and doesn’t sync it to any cloud.

You can actually test this by yourself with two android phones both set them up with health connect and aggregate different apps on them and after a few days you see that both health connect instances are not synced at all even if the phone is connected to the same google account.
