Garmin adds Map Data field and Compass Data field

How to add Garmin Edge 1050 Map Compass Data fieldGarmin adds a Map Data field and a Compass Data field.

The next Garmin Edge 1050 software update is a good one with new features that will also likely appear on other Edge x50 modes in 2025.

Included in Beta 11.17 are the known features for GroupRide and Coach, but added this time, Edge 1050 gets four new and widely requested data fields: Compass, Map, and the 10/30sec power graphics. If you want to see them in action, you must force the update to v11.7.

Full details of what else is included in the update are listed below

Map and Compass Data fields – how they work

When customising your profile, you will find the new data fields  in the Navigation section and also in the Graphical category listings.

How to select Garmin Edge 1050 Map Compass Data field

Previously, the MAP was only available on an entire screen. You could add other data fields to that screen, but customisation was limited. Making the MAP and COMPASS into new data fields offers more flexibility and is a much-requested feature.

The new map and compass data fields appear to fit in many different sizes, I’d say ‘all,’ but I haven’t tested every size.

The main downside of using a MAP data field is that you cannot interact with it. Thus, you can’t pan with your finger or use Zoom for more or less detail. Instead, you have to change to the MAP page, change the zoom on the map page, and then return to the original page, which is not great. Perhaps one day Garmin will add some way to zoom in on a data field map with Di2 (IIRC you can do that with the MAP page)

  1. Hi curious if you know some of the actual specs comparing the 1040 to 1050. Is it the same Bluetooth protocol or is it latest (I imagine 1040 was 5.1?)? Was chip up graded? Dumb question but is there ram? I know they doubled memory which is great. Thanks. Always amazed as most electronics release specs etc. Thanks

    1. i’m working on an edge 1050 review now and if i have that info i will certainly include it.

bluetooth: i think we are on 5.4 now. check the actual differences in the releases. from memory, i don’t think the later versions make any difference to the sort of job 1050 will undertake other than the efficiency of sending audio/music.

1050 is very smooth. i assuem chip is upgraded. it’s been a while since i had the 1040 (i’ve been using 540 as its smaller). 1050 is garmin’s best ever imho. i’m usually critical of the company.
