new Amazfit T-Rex 3 PRO – here’s why it’s better (buy it here)

The original Amazfit T-Rex 3 (reviewed here) is an excellent piece of sports hardware with several market-leading aspects of performance. For example, its map screen scrolling is near-instant compared to multiple seconds from a $1000 Garmin performing the same task. However, it was let down a little by the much-improved app, but at its super low price tag, most drawbacks can be forgiven.

The price of the T-Rex 3 Pro successor has received a significant bump and might cause pause for thought. Check out some more details on Amazon if you want to buy it. I’ll highlight the new additions below and probably review the watch soon. The old T-Rex 3 Review will give yo a good base understanding of the pros and cons of the watch before these new updates.

amazfit t-rex 3 pro - key features

Amazfit T-Rex 3 PRO – What’s new?

  • New smaller case size option – 44mm is added as an option to the existing 48mm
  • The display’s maximum brightness bumped from 2,000 nits to 3,000. Both are very bright. The extra brightness makes the most difference on edge cases on sunny days.
  • The lens is now sapphire glass and was previously Gorilla glass. I wasn’t sure which kind of Gorilla glass was previously used; it’s a moot point. Sapphire glass is the hardest and generally the best. It’s unlikely you’ll scratch this in everyday use.
  • The bezel is changed from the cheaper steel to a superior titanium alloy. Titanium is light and hard.
  • The strap attachment mechanism is upgraded to a Quick Release type. Handy if you have multiple straps to swap for the occasion.
  • There’s a new flashlight. A widely liked feature, helpful around the house or when on unlit trails, or finding something in a dark tent.
    • Dual colours
    • Boost mode
    • SOS mode
  • A microphone and speaker are added.
    • Bluetooth calls can now be made and received. You’ll need to be connected to your phone for this to work.
  • Sports modes are boosted from 170 to 180. I’ve no idea what all 10 new ones are, but one is recreational diving.
  • A new BIOCHARGE feature, similar to Garmin’s Body Battery, has been added to give you frequently updated info on how primed or run down you might be.
  • New routing features
    • Create a round-trip route,
    • re-route without network,
    • navigate turn-by-turn,
    • tap to select a point,
    • plan point-to-point routes,
    • search nearby points of interest
  • Improved maps
    • more terrain details
    • enhanced Map Contrast
    • road network density
  • Check-in points and alerts are added
  • Battery life is improved. As an indication, the best accuracy GPS mode is now 37 hours!
  • Zepp OS is version 5 compared to version 4.5 in the T-Rex3
  • Zepp Flow upgraded from version 1 to 2

Amazfit – Fun Facts

Amazfit says they make their own chips and optical sensors. That’s an interesting claim, as some other companies source generic 3rd party modules. It doesn’t matter either way, so long as they work well.

The company also develops their own motion and health algorithms. Other companies license a specific proven algorithm. This adds cost but also ensures the algorithms work.

Unlike Apple Watch, Amazfit’s products and app work on either Android or iOS

No monthly subscriptions are required. Especially useful for those of us with subscription fatigue.

Finally, there’s a famous 100-mile alpine running race called UTMB 2025. It’s very prestigious for those in that sport. Sponsored Amazfit athletes used the T-Rex 3 Pro watch for navigation and race strategy, with Rod Farvard finishing 9th and Rosa Lara Feliu winning!

Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro – Take Out

This is not a review, and I haven’t used the watch yet. So I can’t really say how good the app improvements are. I suspect the watch is better than the previous version, which was already a fantastic value for money.

However, the new price point only works if the app is better and the new features work well; for example, advanced navigation is hard to get right. Sure, this quality hardware beats most competitors at the same price, but how well do Amatfit’s features and algorithms compare to longstanding market leaders at the same price?

At least Amazfit has tried to design some pretty good-looking watch faces. The same can’t be said of many other leading brands.

  • Body Glide – The Blue anti-chafe stick that all swimmers and many runners use. I use it.
  • Maurten — the race nutrition trusted by elite athletes. Gels and drink mix engineered to be easy on the stomach. I use them.
  • Garmin Varia RTL515 — radar rear light that alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind. Pairs with your Edge or Garmin watch. I use this model.

  1. Ruth Croft won the UTMB for females.
I can clearly see Amazfit becoming a « threat » to established brands in the near future….

  2. I’m interesting to understand how Amazfit will work on it’s watch software, regarding T-Rex 3 and T-Rex 3 Pro.
This will be very important in terms of software lifecycle and strategy. In terms of ecology we can’t change our devices every 2 years, or not only for little new features supported that are software only

    1. Definitely not true, I used my faithful 2 xiaomi phones for 8 years now and had an Amazfit stratos last me through tough weather for 3 years until I changed for a Garmin, not because it died.

  3. This watch gets a lot of hate from certain people. Seems that Amazfit is on a good way. The features and accuracy should be good enough for many people. I don’t miss anything a garmin watch offers. You can now upload your activity history and calorie tracking is easy with the zepp app. So if you can afford a 1000$ watch, buy it. If not, this is an alternative.

  4. If a future model gets an option for Air Integrated Diving at literally a 3rd the price of an equivalent Garmin, then this would definitely be a contender, at least as a backup.
Its already got the QWERTY keyboard for replying to messages, which I have been asking Garmin for a year to be added to the Mk3i, which I think may never happen.
Garmin, Suunto, Coros, Polar should all be concerned and keeping an eye on Amazefit.

  5. I’m here after using the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro for 6 months.

The Good: rich hardware feature list live up to the billing. GPS is accurate, heart rate detection is no worse than other wearables (tightening the strap seems to make it more reliable). And the LED flashlight is way more useful than I expected.

The Bad: Amazfit touts the ability to track hundreds of different workout types, but only the run, cycle, swim, and hyrox workout seem to offer the type of data analysis that rivals a Garmin. I paddle outrigger canoe, and one of the most important metric is distance per stroke, which is available on Garmin (only under Stand Up Paddle Board, but still). It took me weeks to find the right workout for OC paddling – Outdoor Boating – to track stroke rate, but the distance per stroke metric is completely missing. I also find the stroke rate data wildly inconsistent – indicating they have not really done the algorithm refinement to make it useful.

The Ugly: Zepp App for workout analysis is very much the weak link in the Amazfit ecosystem. They still have a long way to go before it comes close to Garmin Connect level of usability.

My verdict: Good for casual activity tracking, but not nearly good enough for serious sports performance analysis outside of the mainstream activities.

    1. Yes I would agree that many brands offer a multitude of sports profiles but they often are just classification mechanisms rather than offering true, dedicated metrics that are specific to the sport.

Not sure I agree on the app, tho I see where you are coming from on the analytics in particular which Garmin is obviously better at. However the general flow and usability of Amazfit’s app is easier to get to grips with I would say.
