Garmin Quatix 8 Pro 47mm – The Buyer’s Guide – everything you need to know

Garmin’s latest addition to the marine smartwatch lineup is the Quatix 8 Pro 47mm, bringing the same groundbreaking Pro features from the Fenix 8 Pro to mariners and boaters. This is essentially the marine-focused version of the Fenix 8 Pro 47mm AMOLED, with enhanced boat mode and specialised nautical features that make it the ultimate companion on the water.

At the heart of today’s announcement is the integration of inReach technology directly into the watch, making it possible to leave your smartphone at home and still use critical connectivity features straight from your wrist – even up to 50 miles offshore.

Garmin Quatix 8 Pro – Model Overview

There is 1 Pro option and the older, larger non-Pro:

  • $1,299.99 – Garmin Quatix 8 Pro 47mm (AMOLED)
  • $1,299.99 – Garmin Quatix 8 51mm (AMOLED)
  • There is a $60 add-on for voice control

This represents the same $200 price premium over standard models seen with the Fenix 8 Pro, reflecting the added connectivity capabilities, although, unlike the Fenix 8 Pro, there is no microLED display option

  • Over 100 activity profiles for life on and off the water
  • InReach is required for all new connectivity features, but the inReach Activation fee is waived

There are significant enhancements beneath these headlines. Let me walk you through the different aspects one by one.

Garmin inReach subscription – you NEED this

You’ll need an inReach subscription to get the new connection abilities. There is no way around this. The inReach subscription is entirely justified, as running that service adds value to you and costs to Garmin. It’s entirely separate from the Connect+ subscription paywall, which is wholly unjustified.

Your Garmin device has a fixed activation fee regardless of which plan you choose. Surprisingly, this is waived for Quatix 8 Pro.

The plans have a base monthly cost of £7.99, $7.99, or 9,99€. Each service you use has a further usage cost; however, that cost is lowered or removed if you opt for a higher, fixed monthly subscription – a more expensive plan. The whole structure makes sense from a cost perspective, but it isn’t very clear and harks back to the early days of mobile phone plans. Garmin will eventually simplify all of this.

LTE and Satellite Tech

The Quatix 8 Pro brings Garmin’s marine connectivity tech to a new level, matching the capabilities introduced with the Fenix 8 Pro.

The satellite constellations used by Garmin have changed from Iridium to the Skylo geostationary network. This is the same network used by Google Pixel’s recent satellite service, managed through Garmin’s Response Center.

Furthermore, a more advanced, energy-efficient version of 4G LTE is used. The Quatix 8 Pro uses 4G LTE-M. You do NOT sign up for a data service via your regular cell phone provider. When you get the InReach subscription, you automatically access the entire global LTE-M network, which is continually expanding and already has over 100 active national networks. For example, LTE-M covers three traditional US networks (T-Mobile, AT&T, US Cellular) and one UK network (Vodafone).

Satellite Availability: Skylo covers the U.S., parts of Canada, and most of Europe, extending up to 50 miles offshore. However, availability worsens as you get further North, possibly also in the mid-Atlantic.

LTE Availability: This is consistently improving; the latest position is shown here.

Let’s go through the new features.

Live Track & Check-Ins

Live Track is an established Garmin feature, but now enhanced for marine use.

What’s changed today is that it works over your inReach subscription without a phone, even when you’re 50 miles offshore.

Live track works over LTE or satellite ie it works off-grid.

There are additional costs if you use LiveTrack over satellite.

An interesting test for LiveTrack over satellite would be in remote offshore locations or areas with heavy weather. The watch’s marine-specific design should handle these conditions better than previous models.

When tracked over LTE, your followers should receive frequent positional updates (I’m unsure of the polling frequency; it’s 10 minutes on satellite). However, you will need the standard inReach subscription plan to avoid high costs from Livetracking over satellite.

The check-in feature is welcome, but its implementation is half-baked. You can store and MANUALLY send one of three saved standard texts to friends and family. ‘Just heading out on the water‘ or ‘I’m back at the marina‘ could be customised versions you save.

This feature needs improvement to automatically send an ‘I’m at the dock’ message when the watch detects you at your marina location, and a customised check-in at sunset or around a weather event would also be helpful to let someone know you’re almost back… or not.

Text Messages

Garmin recently enabled text messaging in some of its newer 2024/25 models. However, that feature required a connected phone.

With your inReach subscription on the Quatix 8 Pro, you can send text messages over LTE or satellite, although the latter has a per-use charge on all but the most expensive inReach plan. This is invaluable when you’re offshore and need to communicate about weather changes, mechanical issues, or coordinate with other vessels.

Rich Messaging

Images/photos can also be sent via the inReach service, but they are not currently available with the Quatix 8 Pro as far as I know.

Garmin Quatix 8 Pro emergency SOS feature with 24/7 Garmin Response coordination center for marine incidents

Make & Take Calls

This feature is not what you’re hoping for. Read carefully.

You make calls using the Garmin Messenger (Calls) app on your watch, and you set it up in the Garmin Messenger smartphone app. Sounds good?

Well…

You can only call other people using the Messenger app. That can be someone else with the Messenger app on their Quatix 8 Pro/Fenix 8 Pro or your friends and family back home using Garmin Messenger on their smartphone.

Since only a small number of people use Garmin Messenger, the feature is useful in only a few scenarios, likely to your close circle of family and friends. That said, for mariners, this could be valuable for vessel-to-vessel communication with crew members who also have the app.

Emergency SOS

Thankfully and sensibly, the SOS service incurs no additional cost if you have an active subscription. The SOS can go out over either LTE or satellite.

For mariners, the Garmin Response coordination Center has experience coordinating more than 1,200 inReach incidents on the water, giving you peace of mind that help is available when you need it most.

Enhanced Boat Mode – The Game Changer for Mariners

The enhanced boat mode is what sets the Quatix 8 Pro apart from the Fenix 8 Pro and makes it purpose-built for marine use.

When activated, boat mode brings vital vessel-connected apps to the forefront:

  • Autopilot controls are accessible from your wrist
  • Trolling motor management
  • Entertainment system control (Fusion audio)
  • Navigation and boating data front and centre on your watch face
  • Quick access to marine-specific functions

When deactivated (you’re back on land), the watch intelligently:

  • Hides marine-specific apps and data
  • Brings everyday connected features back into focus
  • Prioritises health, fitness, and lifestyle apps
  • Returns to standard smartwatch functionality

This context-aware approach means you’re not constantly scrolling through boating features when you’re at the office or gym, and you have instant access to helm controls when you’re on the water.

Chartplotter Voice Control and Remote Marine Integration

The Quatix 8 Pro includes chartplotter voice commands, allowing you to control compatible Garmin chartplotters via Bluetooth using the watch’s built-in speaker and microphone. This keeps your hands on the wheel while navigating.

Remote control capabilities extend to:

  • Force trolling motors – Adjust speed and direction from your wrist
  • Fusion audio systems – Control onboard entertainment
  • Compatible autopilots – Manage your vessel’s course
  • Lighting systems – Control vessel lighting

Battery Life – Similar to Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED

The Quatix 8 Pro 47mm AMOLED shares the same battery profile as the Fenix 8 Pro 47mm AMOLED model (not shown).

  • For those upgrading: Here are the exact figures compared to the older non-Pro 51mm Quatix:
  • For those checking the improvement from a previous generation 47mm model:

Battery life ‘Up to’ hours (always-on) Quatix 8 Pro – 47 mm, AMOLED $1,299.99 Quatix 8 – 51 mm, AMOLED $1,299.99 Fenix 8 – 47 mm, AMOLED $1,099.99
Battery Saver Watch Mode: 23 days 41 days 36 days
Smartwatch: 16 days (7 days) 29 days (13 days) 29 days (16 days)
GPS Only: 47 hours (37 hours) 84 hours (65 hours) 82 hours (60 hours)
All Satellite Systems: 38 hours (30 hours) 68 hours (54 hours) 63 hours (49 hours)
All Satellite Systems + Multi-band:  35 hours (28 hours) 62 hours (49 hours) 55 hours (43 hours)
All Satellite Systems + Music:  10 hours 18 hours 25 hours (23 hours)
Max Battery GPS: 81 hours 145 hours 128 hours
Expedition GPS: 17 days 31 days 26 days

Note that the battery life is lower than that of the earlier Quatix 8 because the Pro model has a physically smaller case and a smaller battery, plus the higher power demands of the LTE and satellite features.

That said, the battery life is excellent for a marine smartwatch with these connectivity features. The 27-day smartwatch mode (15 days with always-on display) is more than sufficient for extended offshore trips, and the 60 hours with all satellite systems active covers most recreational and professional marine activities.

Marine-Specific Hardware Design

The Quatix 8 Pro is built specifically for the harsh marine environment:

  • Leakproof inductive buttons – Designed to withstand water intrusion better than mechanical buttons
  • Metal sensor guard – Protects internal components from impacts and harsh conditions
  • Dive-rated to 40 meters – Suitable for recreational diving activities
  • Specialised diving profiles – Scuba and apnea diving modes included
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire lens – Essential for the marine environment, where scratches from ropes, cleats, and gear are common
  • Durable titanium bezel – Corrosion-resistant and tough enough for daily helm use

Garmin Quatix 8 Pro Opinion

These updates warrant the PRO label for mariners.

The Quatix 8 Pro is a significant step forward for marine smartwatches. By bringing inReach connectivity directly to the wrist, Garmin has created a watch capable of calling for help, texting home, and controlling your vessel entirely on its own.

The enhanced boat mode is the real differentiator as the Quatix 8 Pro intelligently adapts to your environment, bringing helm controls to the forefront when you’re on the water and getting out of your way when you’re not.

The satellite and LTE connectivity extending up to 50 miles offshore is a genuine safety enhancement. For anyone who ventures beyond cellular range – whether fishing, sailing, or cruising – having two-way communication and SOS capabilities directly on your wrist is invaluable. The fact that Garmin’s Response Center has coordinated over 1,200 incidents on the water adds confidence.

Against this is the reality that you’re locked into an inReach subscription. But if you’re serious about boating, particularly offshore, this cost can be justified. What price is there for your safety?

The voice control for chartplotters and remote vessel control capabilities are welcome additions, though their real-world utility will depend on your specific setup and how well they integrate with your existing Garmin marine electronics.

A second downside is the cost. At $1,299.99 plus a monthly subscription, this isn’t an impulse purchase. But for serious mariners, the combination of safety features, vessel control, and genuine off-grid communication makes it worth thinking about.

  1. i am curious about the sales figures for these “special edition” fenix watches (Tactix, Quatix etc.). My guess is something like 95% base model, 5% variants but this is unlikely to be revealed by Garmin.
