New Bike Metric: Is this the New Data Screen We All Need

Wahoo just announced support for hDrop hydration and TymeWear Ventilatory Threshold data metrics. Nice, but where are the wind direction and speed metrics on my ELEMNT?

Wind direction and speed are two key factors that make our outdoor riding faster or more enjoyable. Sure, the Wahoo Ace has onboard pressure sensors (which don’t tell you wind speed or direction), but I just want a recent weather report for where I am that shows the wind speed and direction relative to my direction of travel. I’ll figure out all the road positioning stuff myself, thank you.

Of course, Garmin and Hammerhead already do that via 3rd-party apps.

There’s a but coming.

Take a look at this graphic from Jespr, a Swiss bike computer startup.

Jespr’s unique visualisation neatly shows live wind strength and direction. See the wind — use the wind. [JESPR]

I’ve never seen anything quite like this before, where the wind shadow is indicated, along with the lines showing direction and the speed number in the corner. This is a handy little screen for considering how to position yourself in the draft zone of the person in front of you.

Do we all need this screen?

I guess we don’t need wind info, or it’s displayed as nicely as it is on this screen. However, wind info is a very nice-to-have in my opinion, and this presentation of it adds an extra layer of usefulness. I want it, please!

My favourite kit and nutrition

  • Maurten — the race nutrition trusted by elite athletes. Gels and drink mix engineered to be easy on the stomach.
  • Garmin 90-degree charging adapter — the small adapter that keeps your charging cable tidy at the stem. Essential for race day.
  • Garmin charging puck — the fastest and most reliable way to top up your Garmin before a session.
  • Ravemen FR300 — front light that mounts directly under your Garmin or Wahoo head unit. Keeps your bars clean and your beam pointed where it matters.
  • Garmin Varia RTL515 — radar rear light that alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind. Pairs with your Edge or Garmin watch.
  • Stryd — the footpod that brings running power to your Garmin. The single most useful running upgrade I have made.
  • Favero Assioma Pro RS2 — the power meter pedals most serious cyclists end up choosing. Accurate, easy to move between bikes.
